Janise and glorias science exsoeriment

Name:Janice and Gloria

Title of experiment: Straw oboe experiment

Question:
(What do we want to find out?)
How does the straw change if you cut it smaller and smaller if it makes a higher pitched sound or, if it stays quite.
We want how it made that silly noise.
We want to know why do we have to cut it into a point.

Hypothesis:  (what do you think will happen?)
It will sound like a trumpet.
It will sound like someone farted.
It will be strang.
Sound wave will come out.
The straw will vibrate then the sound will come out through the

Procedure:
How will we find out?
(Step by step)

1. Get a straw

2. Flatten the top of the straw with your fingers

3. when you have flattened your experiment you want to cut it to the edge from your right then you want to cut from you left to make another edge.

Results:
What actually happened?
When you blow it make a funny sound. Suddenly when you cut it smaller and smaller it has more of a higher pitched sound.

Conclusions:
What did we learn?
We learnt when you blow into the straw it makes a funny annoying

Questions:
1. What is producing the sound?
The thing that happens is that the sound makes the phenomenal
2. What pitch did we get when all holes were closed, compared to when the holes were
open?
It makes a high pitch and when it was open it makes a low pitch.
3. What does opening or closing a hole in the straw really mean in terms of vibrating an
air column?
The straw

Procedure:
4. Repeat step 2 with another straw. (DO NOT CUT HOLES IN THIS STRAW)
5. Take the pair of scissors and cut small pieces off the end of the straw while blowing as
shown in the diagram below. Repeat while cutting off more of the straw.
Questions:
What happens to the pitch as you cut off pieces of the straw? It sound like a low or high pitch. Why? Because photo (2).JPG

Maths

You need to use 2 different strategies to answer the following questions:

241 - 68 = 173

312 - 56 =256

173 - 67 =106             JANISE  RAMON DEL GLORIA ANISHA AND Allanah

To fill one jug it takes 3 litres. How many jugs can I fill with 21 litres? 7

To fill a bucket is takes 8 litres. How many buckets can I fill with 56 litres? 7

Echolocation about bats

Echolocation is a form of communication of when bats hunt and find where objects are hidden at night, bats also   communicate with other bats on how they use echolocation, this means that when you speak in a large area, or cave you can hear your own echo. Echolocation is a very special sound, this is a remarkable process of how they use their  ears instead of there eyes at night.

Echolocation is such an exceptional thing for animals because when they wake up at night which means they sleep in the daytime and that is called nocturnal. Echolocation is when bats hunt at night for food, this also helps the bats know where to go at night, because at night when they make a higher pitched sound the sound goes in front of the bat, then they become sound waves and then hit the object then back to the bat. The further away the object the softer the sound.

Echolocation is when sound waves locate the object.
Other animals like whales use echolocation and the whales use water and this is a terrific transmitter  because, the sound waves travel through the water 5 times faster in water then it does in the air.

Bats rely on their ears at night because there eyes are tiny and can not really see so thats why they rely on their ears. The bats ears are quite large compared to the size of the head.
bats don't care at night because they just think

Bats communicate by when they make sound and thats how they gather up into a group
and fly together. They stay together as they are sleeping in the daytime which is  when they are in the cave and using ultrasound which is a special sound which they use with their eyes.

Bats reading echolocation

They See With Their Ears (Rdg Age10-11 years)

Bats have an interesting way of looking at their world. Bats are nocturnal, which means they are most active at night. They don’t use their eyes to find their way around in the dark. They use their ears instead!
Bats are among a very select group of animals. The animals in this group also include whales, porpoises and dolphins. They all use ultrasound, which is a special noise, to do what other animals do with their eyes. This skill is known as echolocation. Echolocation allows bats to hunt for food. It also helps them avoid obstacles in their path as they fly in the dark. It even lets them communicate with other bats.
So how does echolocation work? It’s just like echoes in a large, empty room or at the edge of a canyon. Bats move air across their vocal chords just like people do when they speak or yell. Some bats make the sound come out of their mouths. Others make the sound come out of their noses. The sound they make has a very high pitch. This means the sound waves move very quickly. The energy from the sound waves goes out in front of the bat and bounces off any objects there. It creates an echo that returns back to the bat.
A bat’s ears often appear quite large compared to the size of its head. Depending on where the sound hits on the folds of the bat’s ear, the bat can tell very precisely where an object is. The strength of the echo can even tell the bat how large the object is. The echo from a moving object has a different sound that one that is still. It is either softer or louder. The sound is louder if the object is coming closer and softer if it’s going away. This is important because it helps the bat find insects to eat.
The process of echolocation is very natural for the bat. The bat does not have to think about listening, or what to do next. It works so well that the bat doesn’t care that he is “as blind as a bat.” He can see with his ears!

  1. What kind of sound does a bat use for echolocation?
All of them use ultrasound which is a special sound, to do what other animals do with there eyes.
  1. What kind of echo does a bat hear from an object moving away from it.
They can hear that it has gone softer because it is moving away, the sound is louder if the if the object is coming closer and softer when it is going away.

3. What would you miss if you suddenly switched from seeing with your eyes to echolocation?
It would be remarkable  because it is such a different experience. At the mean time it would be not so fun because it would not so fun I would miss all the things that I used to do,.

  1. What would you miss if you suddenly switched from seeing with your eyes to echolocation? Why?
Seeing my friends and playing in the mornings and playing sports and much more, but It would be quite fun I think being a bat but at the mean time I would not want to be a bat...

  1. What is the main idea of this reading passage? Write a brief summary in 2 - 3 sentences.
  2. That you can hear with your ears and that they use echolocation and how they hunt, because when you are in a large room or cave you can hear your own ech. This is a remarkable process of how they use their ears instead of there eyes.

  1. What might cause echolocation to work differently for whales than it does for bats?
  2. the things is that the whales are in water to the echolocation travels 5 times faster than it is in the air.

  1. What does it mean when is says Bats are among a ‘select group of animals’
  2. They do that because they are using ultrasound and that is how there start to use echolocation.

  1. What is ‘ultrasound’?
  2. this means that you can hear with your ears instead of your eyes and that was what all other animals do but it is a remarkable process of how they do something different..

Plastic Bags by Andre Ngapo, School Journal Part 3. Number 1 2011

WALT: Show our comprehension of the text by identifying the key occurrences.

Success Criteria: I can identify the key occurrences in the text.

Referring to the image on the first page what does the expression on the boys face tell us?

What do you think might happen to him in the story? It looks like he is running somewhere and he is worried, or he has forgotten something.
What do you think the title has to do with the story?Maybe about they use plastic bags and they use it to put things in it for class, because in the image the boy looks worried and in a rush to go somewhere.

Why does Miss Anderson think Trent has been mucking about?
Trent was the only one that had one friend and she was a girl because he does not have much friends to play with so trent played with a girl.

Why do you think he was dizzy as he went out of the classroom?
I think he was about to fall down because in the picture it shows him about to tip side ways,
and he got told of because the teacher told him a question and he did not aser but he did not hear the teacher so he had to go outside by the corridor.

What were the differences between Huia and Trent’s bags and Jason’s? What do you think about the reason for the differences? They had plastic bags because their mum said”she will buy them two new bags”. so they took to school plastic bags while mum was at her work job interview.

What did Trent expect to happen when he went to the principal’s office?
He thought that he was gonna get in trouble about his behavior in class but the principle Msr mcneil said for him to join the maths competition.

How do you think Trent felt when he found out the real reason for going to the principal’s office?
He found out that the principle just wanted him to join the maths competition with other kind but he thought he was gonna get in trouble about his attitude.

How do you think Trent felt at the end of the story, why?
well  looking at the text he is looking a bit happy because in the image he looks like he is smiling and he said who knows what will happen.

Have you ever been really hungry? How did it make you feel?
Very hungry because I would feel like i'm out of energy  and I would miss all the yum food.

At the roadshow I have learnt about how oxygen and how gasses work around object. unfortunately there was ballons and  my friends were scared of them… it was really fun trying all these students experiments because every year that you go it is different. It was such a special day because we were learning so much things about science at tamaki college. last thursday we learnt about how a balloon  had disappeared.

photo (1).JPGAt tamaki college we attended at their college and we were trying out all different thing like..carbon dioxide, hydroxide and all sorts of liquids and gasses. I was so happy I got to go so I was very grateful that I had went and learnt so many different things.

bats infomation

Bats are just phenomenal on how they use echolocation, this means that when you speak in a large area, or cave you can hear your own echo. Echolocation is a very special sound, this is a remarkable process of how they use their ears instead of there eyes at night.

Nocturnal is such an exceptional thing for animals, because of the way they hunt which is called echolocation. At night  there mouth is the most outstanding thing that help them get the mane focus on an object because, some bats make sound from their  mouth, and there noses
and that means when they make sound it is a very high pitched this means the sound waves move quickly and moves to them as the sound waves has hit the object then back to them…
but the further away the object is the the softer the sound you can hear.

It is such an sensational  thing on how bats have bigger ears than their head, I mean can you just imagine you having the size of your ears the same size as your head I can't?
bats are just remarkable on how they live their lives because they sound track with there own ears and they don't even need to try and think about where and how the object is gonna get in there way because they use echolocation  which are a bat cycle  of the living which gets passed on to the baby bats.

Nearly every bat learns how to make sound waves to a object, because if they don't learn fast how do they get food at night if their parents/bats die they will have to become responsible for them to survive and hunt at night by using echolocation...
