Hands up for henna

Hands up for Henna by Adrienne Jansen
School Journal Part 4, Number 2 2002.

WALT: Skim and scan the text for key information and make inferences.

Success Criteria: I can locate the key information in the text.
I can use information found in the text and make my own conclusions about this information.

Answer the following questions in red:

Looking at the images on the front page, what do you think Henna is? Why do you think this?
I think it’s about a design of their type of production for when they do a kind of a special day.

What do the words dramatic and decoration mean?
Dratic means you going overboard like if I walk and I tell my friend to hold my dollar and she puts it on the floor and you talk and talk about the coin on the floor that dramatic, because it was just on the floor.Decoration means you're designing your house a party and lots a things you can do like creating.am

Why has Henna been used for hundreds of years in Somalia?
They use henna because it’s a troduction to their country and they also use henna for special places like  weddings and as a body decorations  and New years celebration, and many other kind of occasions.

Where is the Henna imported from, why do they not just purchase it in New Zealand?
They like to use their own henna because in New Zealand it’s not the same because they have different products thats why I think they use their own because it says in the text that they have differnt products.

What does the Henna powder feel like? What substance has the writer compared Henna to?
Henna feel like a dramatic and beautiful form of decoration because when they put it on they just putting the product on and it may hurt your arm only a little bit because it take hours to do the henna.

Why do you think it took so long to draw the outlines for the Henna?
I recommend that it took long because it’s painstakingly begins to fill in the out line of Asli’s feet because your feet will get tied and when I looked at the picture it looked like it took a long time to do the footwork.

does the writer mean when he says “painstakingly begins to fill the outlines on Asli’s feet”?
It means like it was painstakingly for example I went to the hospital and it was five hours to get my tern and it took very long, so basically it means it takes a long time.

What type of traditional elements does the outlines include? (refer to the images)
High quality product that they would mix with mud and tea to make the final color and the glossy shine. She mixes it with

What do they use when applying the Henna? For what purpose do they use this instead of a small stick?
They use a plastic bag thats shaped as a cone, with the end snipped off to make a nozzle I recommend they use it because  if they can’t find a stick, they  use a plastic bag to squeeze the product out and it would help more to squeeze it out.

Wednesday:

What does Asli have to do after the Henna has been applied to her skin?
After the henna she pasts dries she has to keep her arms and feet in the air, so it can dry properly so that it will not smudge when she goes to a special place.

Henna has an ‘earthy’ smell, describe what you think this smells like?
I recomend it is quite gase and it has abit of a strong smell but at the same time I think it won't smell so bad because when it drys up you won't smell it so bad but it still has tea so it will make her smell just a little bit like tea.

Baby oil is rubbed into the skin after the Henna has been applied, for what reason do you think they do this?
So that  when they apply it, it will make the drawing quite shiny and so it can blend in with the skin but it will also blend in with drawing to make it a extra shine to make her quite moist o when she goes to a special place it won't really dry up.

How did Asli’s school friends previously react when she last had Henna?
The boy said ‘what happened to your hand’ but her friends said ‘cool’

How was Asli’s sister having fun?She was getting the henna done and and getting patterns on her arm. Is this different to the type of fun you have. Yes because she likes thing on her hand and I love playing lots of sports and have fun, and playing with friends. How does your activity of fun and Asli’s sisters differ? She likes things on her hand and I like things like sports.

What is Henna?Henna is a pattern and a decoration and it is very special in their country they henna takes on month for the henna to come of.

Will the tradition of Henna continue?yes because it not just their country they also use henna in other countries.

Thursday / Friday

Henna is seen as being traditional, can you elaborate and find examples in the text of how it is traditional? It’s trodicanil because they treasure it and they use it in special   acause when they have something special on they use henna.

In what countries do they use Henna?

Do you think because Henna is used on the skin it is encouraging people to get Tattoo’s why / why not.Australia, america, and also Malaysia people also do it is most other countries.

Would you recommend henna to be used by men/ women or both? What is your reasoning for this?some people use it as a tattoo because they want henna instead of a real one because a real one does not come of and maybe they don't want a real one so they use henna.I recomend men and women but I think many women because the women and girls a more common.

Write a step by step set of instructions at to how Henna is applied. nomel
They use mud with tea and coffee they only use coffee if they don't have tea,

then they mix it in a bowl. THey mix it with a stick but if they don't have a stick they use a plastic bag shaped like a cone with it end snipped off.
